Online in France Who's online? Well, who isn't? July 2004: Internet use has almost become a way of life. May 2000: Estimates now reach 8.6 million users in France, which represents a growth rate of more than a million since the end of 1999. May 1998: Estimates range up to 1.3 million Internet users in France. LUXEMBOURG, 27 juin [1997](AFP) - Le gouvernement français veut que tout élève sortant des collèges et lycées ait "une pratique normale d'Internet" à partir de l'an 2000, a déclaré vendredi le secrétaire d'Etat à l'Industrie Christian Pierret. Le gouvernement veut accorder "la priorité au développement d'Internet dans les collèges et lycées", a dit M. Pierret en marge du conseil des ministres européens des Télécommunications à Luxembourg. Il a affirmé que France Télécom offrirait des tarifs réduits pour permettre aux collèges et lycées de se connecter à moindre coût. [Editor's Note: no comment] Spring 1997, some say 25 others 30 million users world wide. The Web is doubling in size -- it seems -- about every day. Domain name registrations with InterNIC USA hit 1 million on March 6, 1997!!!!! January 1996 some 20 million users were connected to the Internet worldwide with about 9.5 million Internet hosts. In September 1995: there were 6.6 million Internet computers hosts in the world. The projection is 100 million computer hosts by the year 2000. Who's online in France? As of July 1995, France ranked 9th in the world with nearly 116,000 hosts. That was an 18% increase since January 1995. Spring 1997 France lags behind many other European countries in connectivity. But the winds of change are blowing. Many French companies are using .com addresses, which makes if difficult to get an exact count of domaine names for companies in France.
