Procedure for Individual Students:
Students who wish to participate in the SL lists but are not currently enrolled in an English class may apply directly to the SL List Co-owner, Thomas Robb, trobb@cc.kyoto-su.ac.jp for permission to join. Individuals must make the following promise when applying:I promise to read the rules for participation in the Student Lists and to follow them faithfully. I understand that I may be removed from the SL lists if I violate these rules.Procedure -- Joining as a class:
Teachers with students holding e-mail accounts register their classes as described below. Their students then subscribe to the main list, INTRO-SL. There, they introduce themselves and reply to the introductory messages of other students around the world. INTRO-SL is designed to give first-timers a chance to hone their e-mail skills before joining the other topically-based lists. When the students feel ready, they can then join any of the other lists and participate in the discussions that they find there.Registering Your Students:
To register, send a message to trobb@cc.kyoto-su.ac.jp with the following information:
- 1. Your name and institution
- 2. Number of students
- 3. Duration of class term
- 4. Name of the node the students will use (the part following the '@' mark).
You will then be placed on a special discussion list (TCHR-SL) for the teachers who are involved in this project and will receive another document entitled "Facilitating Use of the Student Lists: Guidelines for Teachers" which contains further advice and a handout, with quiz, to help orient your students.

- Listserv Lists
Whatever your interest, you can find a listserv list to join. Subscribing is "free" -- you do not pay a subscription fee. There are so many listserv lists that if you download the entire file, you will use up about 500 sheets of paper!!! Try NOT to do that: save a tree today! Instead:
1. Send an email message to listserv@listserv.net
2. In the body of the message, type LIST GLOBAL/(your-keyword)In place of keyword, write the subject you are interested in. For example
LIST GLOBAL/MUSICListserv can look for as many topics as you want; just be sure to put each request on a different line.
You will receive a list of lists for each of your chosen topics. Then you can subscribe to any and all lists you like!
Be sure to keep a file of Welcome Messages for any list you subscribe to! You may want to unsubscribe at some point!! Have fun!
Mailing List Checklist
With the kind permission of Ira M. Pasternack at Clearly Internet or InternethicsQuestions to ask oneself before posting a message to a mailing list:
1. Is the message being sent TO the appropriate destination (the whole list vs. one or more selected individual(s))?
2. Is the subject line descriptive of my message?
3. Have I included only enough of any past message that my message refers to so that other list members know what I am referring to?
4. Is my message as brief as possible, and have I referred interested parties to a web site or other method of getting additional information (or offered to send more information via e-mail for those who want it)?
5. Have I attempted to express appreciation to list members who have made a useful contribution to the list?
6. If I have disagreed with someone else's ideas, have I attempted to avoid a personal attack against them?
7. Have I attempted to ignore or defuse anything which I consider a personal attack against me?
8. Does my message say something more than "me too" - does it say *why* I agree, give another example of the point being made, or in some way add to the message?
9. Have I offered to summarize the replies to any question I asked?
10. Have I signed the message, and included my e-mail address in the body?
11. Did I proofread the message?
