CELIA
Computer-Enhanced Language
Instruction Archive

CELIA is the Computer-Enhanced Language Instruction Archive
http://www.latrobe.edu.au/www/education/celia/celia.html
Or using FTP at:
ftp://ftp.latrobe.edu.au/pub/CELIA Note: this address is case-sensitive!
gopher://gopher.latrobe.edu.au/Information

Several languages are represented there, most with DOS, Macintosh, and Windows subdirectories.

The DOS English directory comes through the efforts of Lloyd Holliday; comments about those holdings should be addressed to him at edulh@LURE.LATROBE.EDU.AU Lloyd Holliday is also in charge of CELIA overall, so you can direct general CELIA questions to him as well.

The Macintosh English directory comes primarily from the holdings of TESOL's CALL Interest Section Macintosh library. Comments about Macintosh software should be addressed to Deborah Healey at dhealey@oregon.uoregon.edu

The Windows English directory is contributed by Jim Buell. Please address any comments to Jim Buell at jbuell@gol.com

You are welcome to add any freeware or shareware for language teaching to CELIA. Upload it to the Incoming directory of CELIA and drop an e-mail note to the appropriate librarian (see addresses above), who will update the indexes. It is very helpful if you include a brief description of the program in your e-mail message.

CELIA's central archive is an ftp site at La Trobe University in Australia. There about 60 Windows programs, a dozen or more DOS-only programs, and perhaps a hundred Mac programs, most collected by TESOL's CALL-IS software librarians. There are several ways to reach CELIA, depending on your system.

The Old Way (text-only internet access): From a Unix shell account, run ftp, and type "open ftp.latrobe.edu.au". Then, use "cd" (change directory) commands to navigate to /pub/CELIA/english. There are separate subdirectories for \dos, \mac and \win, with further levels of directories for /games, /listening, /grammar, and other subject areas. Use the command "dir" or "ls" to see the names of the files in any subdirectory, and download files to your system with the "get" command. (Hint: you'll need to tell ftp whether you'll be downloading a "binary" or an "ascii" file, too.)

The New Way: With graphical access to the internet, it becomes much easier. In Netscape Navigator, for instance, you can open "ftp://ftp.latrobe.edu.au" and see a graphical representation of the files there. Rather than typing "cd" and "dir" commands, you can click on a folder or file at any level to enter the folder or view or download the file.

All of the program files at CELIA are in compressed format, with extensions .zip for DOS/Win and .hqx for Mac. You'll need decompression software, such as pkunzip for DOS/Windows or unStuffIt (or is it BinHex?) for Mac, to install the programs onto your computer. Most Windows programs also require you to run an included setup.exe program to install all the bits and pieces in the proper directories.

Anyone with access to useful shareware or freeware for language instruction should consider uploading it to CELIA for all of us to share. Contact Lloyd Holliday (edulh@lure.latrobe.edu.au) for details.

Hope this helps,
Jim Buell
TESOL CALL-IS MS-Windows librarian

May 12, 1996
Dear CALL-eagues,
At the Chicago TESOL convention, the CALL Interest Section unveiled a new CD-ROM of shareware, freeware and publishers' demos for Mac, Windows and DOS users. This was the CALL-IS librarians' first attempt to compile useful software for English instruction into a single package - a crying need, really, with a floppy-based library that was approaching 100 disks. TESOL-CELIA '96 is a volunteer effort, created by a half-dozen IS members and others working around the world. Start-up funding was provided by the TESOL, with the expectation that costs would be recovered through disc sales.

The software is similar to the collection archived at the CELIA site (ftp://archive.latrobe.edu.au/pub/CELIA/english), but with some differences due to the need to obtain software authors' distribution permissions. Altogether, there are 267 mb of Win/DOS files, and 114 mb of Mac files, including most contents from the first four issues of TESL-EJ.

Now, we in the CD Project are deciding whether the initial version of TESOL-CELIA '96 is "ready for prime time" - that is, whether its quality is high enough to market it broadly as is, or if it really needs a lot more work before it becomes a full-fledged TESOL publication. If you purchased a copy of TESOL-CELIA '96 in Chicago, or if you have had the opportunity to evaluate a colleague's copy. then the CALL-IS librarians would like very much to hear from you. If you have had any problems or difficulties with using this first-of-its-kind CD-ROM, please let us know so we can correct them. Please also let us know about the usefulness of the navigation tools, the installation features, the file structure, and the actual programs you've found on TESOL-CELIA '96.

Mac comments should be sent to Deborah Healey: DHealey@oregon.uoregon.edu

DOS/Win comments should go to me: jbuell@gol.com, or jbuell@khc.kansai-gaidai-u.ac.jp

Inquiries about obtaining the initial-release version of TESOL-CELIA should be addressed to Helen Kornblum, Director of Communications and Marketing, at the TESOL Central Office: publ@tesol.edu
